In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of The Skin I’m In, I wrote a poem, dedicated to the me 20 years ago, and those thoughts that strolled through my head.

To the You Twenty Years Ago:

If I could tell the you of yesterday,
words to get you through those
tucked in the back of your mind days
this is what I would whisper,
your skin is not too dark
the brown not dirt
your skin is an adornment
of molecules enclosed in a hue
no mix of paint could recreate.
If I could tell the you of yesterday
words to get you through those
tear stained,
thrown off balance days
this is what I would whisper,
don’t listen to those who say
You got too dark
over the summer
how long is it going to take
for you to return to your regular color?

You are not a television program
they don’t know
the sun rejuvenates
digs into melanin
makes a new.
If I could tell the you of yesterday
words to get you through trying days,
this is what I would write down
pass to you on a piece
of folded paper.

This is what I would whisper.

This is what I would say.

This is what I would yell.
